At the beginning of May, a new Eddy Covariance (EC) flux tower was installed in Delta de l’Ebre! Shout-out to Ariane Arias Ortiz, Angèlica Busquets Rubiés, Iosif Doundoulakis, and Yinghuan Qin. This tower, located in a rice field at Finca La Llanada, will continuously measure high-resolution ecosystem-atmosphere exchanges of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and water vapor(H2O) associated with rice cultivation. The three wind components and key meteorological variables such as temperature, relative humidity, rainfall or radiation, will also be monitored. The site was established through a collaboration with the CLIMSES unit at Eurecat in Amposta.
These measurements will allow us to study which meteorological conditions drive greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane emissions, which are very relevant in rice paddies. We will be able to compare the results with data from an EC tower located in another rice field at the Delta, helping us investigate the effects of conventional versus ecological agricultural practices on greenhouse gas emissions.
