Las bandas de bronces de Tarapacá (Chile) como contexto de aprendizaje musical y de transmisión cultural

In this paper the phenomenon of the brass bands in Tarapacá (Chile) is examined from an ethnomusicological and educational perspective. On the one hand, the traits of the musicians are investigated and, on the other hand, data is gathered and reflections made on the characteristic venues and repertoires.

Based on prior knowledge of the field, this exploratory study drew on a sample of musicians from bands in the region to conduct interviews and a survey. In addition, various materials (videos, music scores and other library resources) were reviewed. The analysis of all the collected data explores the ways in which the musicians join and mature in the bands. The results highlight the close relationship between the kind of learning that occurs in this context and the socio-cultural functions, repertoires and performance spaces that distinguish these bands. Finally, the implications for ethnomusicology and education are discussed in accordance with the results. Among other points, these suggest giving prestige to the processes of informal and non-formal music education in view of its evident functionality and effectiveness in a given cultural context.

En este artículo se aborda el fenómeno de las bandas de bronces de Tarapacá (Chile) desde una perspectiva etnomusicológica y educativa. Por un lado, se investigan las características de los músicos que las integran y, por otro lado, se aportan datos y se reflexiona acerca de los espacios y del repertorio que les son propios.

Partiendo de un conocimiento previo del campo, este estudio exploratorio se realizó a partir de entrevistas y de un cuestionario a una muestra de músicos de bandas de la región. De manera complementaria, se revisaron diversos materiales (vídeos, partituras y otras fuentes documentales). El análisis de todos los datos recogidos indaga en los recorridos mediante los cuales los músicos llegan y se desarrollan en las bandas. Los resultados  ponen de manifiesto la estrecha relación existente entre el tipo de aprendizaje que se da en este contexto y las funciones socioculturales, repertorios y espacios performativos propios de dichas formaciones. Finalmente, se discuten las implicaciones etnomusicológicas y educativas que sugieren los resultados obtenidos y que, entre otras, abogan por prestigiar a los procesos de aprendizaje musical informales i no formales en base a su clara funcionalidad y efectividad en un determinado contexto cultural.
