Sea Peoples Lab is a transdisciplinary research laboratory working on the socio-ecological relationships between humans and the ocean. Our focus is on the implications of justice for driving transformation towards sustainable, equitable, and inclusive coasts, seas, and the ocean for nature and humans. Our research focuses on the nexus between the Global North and Global South. We develop studies of coastal communities and fisheries in Europe (Mediterranean and North Atlantic Ocean), North and South America (Pacific and North Atlantic Ocean), Asia (Indian Ocean) and South Africa (Indian Ocean and South Atlantic Ocean).

The objective is to facilitate the transition to sustainability for both humanity and the marine environment. In this regard, we acknowledge the intricate interdependence between cultural knowledge, social systems, and marine ecosystems, together with the integration of the various moral and ethical angles involved in the complexity inherent in current socio-ecological problems. These should serve as the basis for political decision-making from an approach based on human and environmental rights.

Research Lines:

*Human dimensions of conservation (e.g. Marine Protected Areas)

*Socioeconomic and sociocultural aspects of fisheries

*Marine governance and management systems

*Ocean culture (Ocean Literacy) and socio-ecological values

*Marine Political Ecology

*Sustainable seafood systems and markets

*Climate change, justice, and equity

*Knowledge systems, coastal communities, and indigenous peoples
