Dr Adriana Patiño-Santos, Co-investigator, University of Southampton (UK)

I hold a PhD in Linguistics (Sociolinguistic ethnography) from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, an MA in Hispanic Linguistics from the Instituto Caro y Cuervo, Bogotá, Colombia and an MA in Linguistics (Discourse Analysis) from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. I have been a member of the Department of Modern Languages in the University of Southampton since 2012. Previously, I was living and working in Madrid and Barcelona, Spain, where I did teaching and research work for over ten years.

My research interests include interactional sociolinguistics, language socialisation, intercultural communication and multilingualism. My research has been focussed on the relationship between Spanish and other languages within the framework of globalisation, from a sociolinguistic ethnographic perspective. I have concentrated on the social processes involved in interaction by focussing on the intersection between language, ideology and identity in institutional settings. In this regard, I have identified multilingual schools as key sites for my research, offering an ideal window through which to observe complex sociolinguistic situations.
