Svetlana Khromova presented her work at the first annual event of the project “Nature in the City”, focusing on nature-based solutions (NBS) and climate adaptation in urban environments. The event was organized by the Urban School of Science Po in Paris during 11 and 12th of December 2024.
Exploring Multifunctional Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainable Stormwater Management
Khromova presented her work on developing nature-based solutions (NBS) to mitigate urban runoff through a four-step approach:
- Identifying urban needs.
- Strategically allocating NBS based on site-specific conditions.
- Assessing runoff reduction capacities using the InVEST flood risk mitigation model.

Modeling the co-benefits of these solutions, including thermal comfort, recreation, water storage, habitat provisioning, and water quality improvements.
The study analyzed two scenarios:
- Scenario 1, aligned with the local urban plan Pla Natura 2021-2030, aims to provide 1 m² of greenery per resident by 2030, translating to 160 hectares of new green spaces.
- Scenario 2, a theoretical model, explores a more ambitious expansion, increasing green areas by 2,498 hectares.
This research highlights the potential of NBS to enhance urban resilience while delivering multiple environmental and social benefits.
