In three pilot cities, Paris, Munich and Zurich, ICOS Cities supported the set up an atmospheric monitoring infrastructure to measure greenhouse gas concentrations at city scale. This enabled these cities to move beyond estimation and into verifiable, data-driven climate action. Together with a city network, consisting of 12 additional European cities, ICOS Cities also developed a set of tools and guidelines to support policy-makers in their climate action.
Within the 12 European cities, Barcelona played a major role, with an urban greenhouse gas network established in early 2021, which is continuously maintained. We also still collaborate closely with the ICOS team to make the datasets publicly available on a regular basis and are working to improve visualisation tools and Jupyter notebooks for using the data. And although the ICOS Cities project officially concluded last year, its impact continues. A wide range of valuable resources, tools, and guidelines developed throughout the project remain freely accessible and ready to support cities in advancing their climate strategies.
