David Owen attended and participated in the conference titled “More Pride and Less Prejudice: Jane Austen at 250″, hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Porto, Portugal, from 02–04 October.
The conference—with plenary sessions given by Professor John Mullan of University College London and Professor Fiona Stafford of the University of Oxford—was a broad-ranging forum for discussing aspects of Austen’s work and critical reception.
David presented a paper titled “They Also Serve: Jane Austen’s Domestic Spaces as Theatres of War”, which attempts to bridge the fundamental objectives of the Beyond Postmemory research group and a revisionist understanding of Austen’s use of the domestic setting in her major fiction.
