FADO-ME reconceptualises fado as a cultural economy shaped by contemporary forces of globalisation, professionalisation, and commercial mediation.
The project also introduces a novel research angle that foregrounds cultural management strategies, commercial logics, and mediation practices as central to the evolution of fado.
The research is conducted in Portugal and Spain, with a primary focus on the cultural politics of the cities of Lisbon and Barcelona. It includes four months of fieldwork in Lisbon, alongside six months of hands-on experience in cultural policymaking through a placement with a non-academic partner hosted by the Cultural Institute of Barcelona (ICUB).
The project is currently in its initial phase.
