Poster presentation on fairness washing at the Fifth European Conference on Algorithmic Fairness

Our researcher Anna Capellà i Ricart presented a poster on “Technical fairness interventions under review: are we falling into the “fairness washing” trap?” at the Fifth European Conference on Algorithmic Fairness (Formerly EWAF) held at University of Ghent (Belgium) between 2-4 september of 2026.

The poster showcased what can we learn from discriminatory AI systems, as discrimination is not punctual, but structural and systemic, while exploring the main applicable legal frameworks . Parting from this considerations, the intervention explored how Fairness washing refers to companies using fairness research to improve the public perception of their AI systems, while the proportionality test can be used to justify that they have taken all available or reasonable measures to make an algorithm as fair as possible.
