Dr. J. Polo visit
Dr. Juan Polo, from Technology Innovation Institute in Abu Dhabi, has visited our group during the second half of July. It was a pleasure to listen to his two seminars on atomtronics and persistent atomic currents as well as to engage in very fruitful discussions with him on these topics. Thank you for your visit Dr. Polo!

Prof. Yongping Zhang visit
On July 29th Prof. Yongping Zhang from Shanghai University visited the optics group at UAB. It was a pleasure to have him and discuss with him. Thank you for your visit Prof. Yongping Zhang!

Prof. Verònica Ahufinger’s farewell celebration
On July 17, we gathered to celebrate Professor Verònica Ahufinger’s remarkable career at UAB. Over the past few decades, Verònica has distinguished herself not only as an outstanding educator and pioneering researcher, but also as a generous and inspiring colleague. Though we’ll miss her presence here, we’re thrilled that she’s embarking on a new chapter at ICFO. Wishing you all the very best, Verònica—may your next adventure be as rewarding as the legacy you leave behind!


Dr. G. Pelegrí visit
On July 16th Dr. Gerard Pelegrí from University of Strathclyde gave a seminar titled “Quantum optimisation of weighted graph combinatorial problems with neutral atom arrays”. It was very interesting to hear about his research and discuss physics with him. Thank you for your visit Dr. Pelegrí!

Profs. Weiping Zhang and Yan Ling Xue visit
On July 11th we had the pleasure to receive the visit of Prof. Weiping Zhang from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Prof. Yan Ling Xue from East China Normal University. Thank you for your visits Prof. Weiping Zhang and and Prof. Yan Ling Xue!

Outreach Activity: Campus Itaca 2025
From 26 June to 16 July, the Optics Group opened again their laboratories to high school students as part of the Campus Ítaca 2025 educational programme.
Conference: Optoel 2025
From July 2 to 4, several members of the Optics Group attended the Optoel 2025 conference in Terrassa.

Dr. J. Ramella-Roman visit
On July 3, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. J. Ramella-Roman from Florida International University to our group. We truly appreciated the opportunity to engage with her. Thank you so much for visiting us, Dr. Ramella-Roman!

Workshop: Topological Photonics workshop 2025
From June 30th to July 2nd, V. Ahufinger and D. Viedma attended the Topological Photonics workshop (TOPOPHOTO2025) in San Sebastián, where recent advancements on the implementation of topology across several photonic platforms were presented.
D. Viedma presented a poster on how one can induce nontrivial topology on a flat band system by using impurities, and how to build such a system in Optical waveguides.

Conference: World of Photonics Congress 2025
From 22 June to 27 June 2025, I. Estevez, I. Montes and Y. Mao assisted to the World of Photonics Congress 2025 in Munich.
They shared their latest research. They presented some of their work related to the analysis and optimization of a Mueller polarimeter, capable of extracting all sixteen elements of a Mueller matrix with just eight measurements and the potential of polarimetric measurements in biomedical imaging. Moreover, they presented a polarization-based Monte Carlo simulation to model Mueller matrices of nanoparticles samples, establishing a causal relationship between light-matter interactions and depolarization metrics.

Quantum Days at the UAB
On Friday, May 30, V. Ahufinger participated in the “La Realitat Quàntica” Jornada de Ciència i Tecnologia Quàntiques organized by the Real Acadèmia de les Ciències i les Arts de Barcelona (RACAB). She gave a talk entitled Simulació quàntica amb àtoms ultrafreds (Quantum simulation with ultracold atoms).

Visit: Quantum Transport group at the University of Aveiro
From May 19 to May 23, Y. Zhai, D. Viedma and V. Ahufinger visited the Quantum Transport group at the University of Aveiro. It has been a very insightful and productive week. Thank you, Ricardo Dias and Anselmo Marques for hosting us!

International Day of Light
On May 16th, we celebrated the International Day of Light with a fruitful event organized in collaboration with the Facultat de Ciències of the UAB.
During the event, attendees enjoyed the talk “Structured Light and Quantum Applications” given by Dr. Adam Vallés from the Optics group.
Throughout the day, students from the faculty participated in various outreach activities hosted by the Student Chapter OPTICA’T UAB. Additionally, the winners of the “Photocat” photo contest were announced and received their awards, which were generously funded by the UAB, OPTICA, OptoSigma, Orlum and SEDOPTICA.

Quantum Days at the UAB
V. Ahufinger participated in the “Quantum Days at the UAB“, held from 5 to 7 May the UAB Faculty of Science. This was an event organised as part of the United Nations’ International Year of Quantum Science and Technology which will bring together renowned researchers and students to explore the latest advances and real-life applications of quantum science.
Calçotada 2025
This March we enjoyed our traditional Calçotada. Thank you everyone one for gathering and cooking delicious calçots!


Career Talk with Optics Expert Roger Artigas
On March 20, the Optics Group organized a special event at the Faculty of Science, where undergraduate students had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Roger Artigas, a leading expert in optical engineering. During the session, he shared his personal and professional journey, reflecting on how his studies in optics shaped his career and offering insights into job opportunities in the field.
Dr. R. Artigas, graduated in Physics from the UAB in 1997, is the founder of Sensofar Tech SL, where he currently serves as President and CTO.
The event was a great opportunity for students to hear firsthand from a leader in the field and learn more about real-world applications and career paths in optics.

Outreach Activity: Dissabtes de la Física
On Saturday, February 22, the Optics Group welcomed high school students into their labs as part of the Dissabtes de la Física outreach program. During the visit, students explored key concepts and real-world applications of optics and photonics. They also had the chance to engage with researchers and UAB undergraduate students.
As part of this activity, I. Estévez gave a talk titled “Polarimetria: Descobrint el que és ocult amb llum” (“Polarimetry: Discovering the Hidden with Light”), where she presented the group’s ongoing work on applied polarimetry for the visualization and identification of biological tissues.

Outreach Activity: 11F, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
On Tuesday, February 19, the Optics Group had the pleasure of welcoming a group of 11 years old students from Bellaterra. During their visit, M. Canabal and I. Estévez led hands-on workshops to introduce the children to the fascinating world of light. Through fun and interactive activities, the students explored why white light is so important and learned about different types of light sources, such as LEDs, lasers, and spectral lamps.
This outreach activity is part of our ongoing commitment to bring science closer to younger audiences and inspire curiosity about optics from an early age.
Exhibition: “Les doctores honoris causa de la UAB”
The Optics Group has collaborated with the UAB Libraries to honor the university’s women honoris causa doctors through a special exhibition (“Les doctores honoris causa de la UAB“). The initiative highlights the contributions of 18 remarkable women who have been recognized by the UAB for their excellence in fields such as science, culture, education, and human rights.
Among them is physicist Dr. Katarzyna Chalasinska-Macukow, awarded an honoris causa doctorate in 2008. Her nomination was proposed by M. Yzuel and J. Campos in recognition of her close and fruitful collaboration with our research group.
This exhibition aims to celebrate both the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11) and International Women’s Day (March 8). It will be on display across all UAB Libraries during the months of February and March.

Outreach Activity: 11F, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
On Wednesday, February 12, researchers M. Canabal and I. Estévez from the Optics Group, accompanied by three UAB students, visited Pau Claris High School in Barcelona to lead a workshop on optics and photonics. The session aimed to inspire young students—especially girls—to explore careers in science and technology, and to promote greater visibility for women in STEM fields.
Thanks to everyone at Pau Claris for having us — we had a great time sharing science with you!

COLD ATOM Workshop 2025
M. Miranda, C. Iacovelli, J. Bergmann, P. Fontana , Y. Zhai and A. Celi attended the COLD ATOM Workshop 2025, held from January 30th to 31th in València. The conference focused on recent advances in Atom Physics research in Spain.
M. Miranda gave a talk about non-Abelian lattice gauge theories. The other people also presented their research lines in the Optics group, either through posters or presentations.

FASLIGHT network update meeting
A. Vallés, D. Viedma and J. Fernández presented the research lines of the Optics group in the second meeting of the national FASLIGHT network, from January 20th to 21st, in Santiago de Compostela. The meeting focused on the recent advances of Spanish research groups on the topic of structured light.

Award: Best Student Paper Award
During SPIE Photonics West 2025, M. Canabal received the Best Student Paper Award for her work titled “Isotropic depolarization filter: outperforming biological samples imaging visualization via polarimetric data processing” presented at the Polarized Light and Optical Angular Momentum for Biomedical Diagnostics 2025. Congratulations, Mónica!

Conference: SPIE Photonics West
Last week, J. Campos, I. Estevez and M. Canabal attended the #SPIEBiOS conference at Photonics West 2025, held from January 25th to 30th in San Francisco.
They were thrilled to share their latest results, where they developed a depolarization filter to enhance contrast in polarimetric images, achieving remarkable results in biological tissue inspection.

2025 Women in Optics notebook – SPIE
Prof. María J. Yzuel has contributed to the 2025 Women in Optics notebook, a special 20th-anniversary edition that honors the collective impact of women engineers, scientists, industry leaders, and academics.

We’re happy to have Professor Lu Zhou from East China Normal University visiting our group. Welcome!

JPhD Meeting at ICMAB
M. Canabal-Carbia and Y. Mao have attended the JPhD Meeting at ICMAB (Bellaterra, 27-29 November 2024).
M. Canabal-Carbia presented a talk about the use of polarimetric techniques to unveil structures in biological samples. Y. Mao gave a talk about “the potential of inference by applying polarization-based Monte-Carlo simulation”. Good job Mónica and Luna!


PhD Defense – David Viedma

Nit Europea de la Recerca – UAB
On September 27th, the Optics Group, together with the UAB Student Chapter Optica’t, participated in the European Research Night, organized for the first time at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. This public event is dedicated to science outreach, aiming to bring research and innovation closer to people of all ages in a simple and fun way. We contributed several micro-workshops showing various optical phenomena, making science more accessible and engaging for the community.

Outreach workshop for high schools
In September 2024, we participated in our first outreach visit of the 2024/2025 school year at a high school. We had a great time explaining the research we conduct in the Optics Group and explaining various experiments. Thank you for having us, IES La Serreta!

Award: Premio Justiniano Casas de Investigación en Imagen Óptica (9th Edition)
Dr. Albert Van Eeckhout Alsinet has received the “Justiniano Casas Research Award in Optical Imaging” (9th Edition) for his work related to his doctoral thesis, conducted within the Optics Group, titled “Polarimetric Methods for Image Enhancement in Biological Applications,” supervised by Dr. Juan Campos and Dr. Ángel Lizana. Congratulations, Albert!

Award: Premio Investigador Postdoctoral RNO2024
During RNO2024, Dr. Iván Montes received the Postdoctoral Researcher Award for his oral presentation titled “Experimental Errors in a Mueller Matrix Imaging Polarimeter Based on Liquid Crystal Variable Retarders.” Congratulations, Iván!
Conference: Reunión Nacional de Óptica RNO2024
From July 3rd to 5th, the Optics Group had the pleasure of attending the National Optics Meeting (RNO2024) in Murcia. It was an excellent opportunity to learn about the current state of research and outreach in Optics and Photonics in Spain, and to connect with researchers and colleagues from all over the country. In addition to enjoying the talks, posters, and plenary sessions, we had the opportunity to share some of our research.


Outreach Activity: Campus Itaca 2024

They also had the opportunity to interact with the researchers.



Conferences: Atomtronics
V. Ahufinger and A. Pérez-Obiol have attended the Atomtronics workshop in Benasque (from 19 May to 1 June 2024).
V. Ahufinger presented an invited talk about the use of a lattice of rings loaded with ultracold atoms carrying orbital angular momentum to mimick a paradigmatic one dimensional topological model, the Su-Schieffer-Heeger. A. Pérez-Obiol gave a contributed talk about simulation of lattice Hamiltonians on digital quantum computers, in particular on devising adiabatic and variational algorithms to solve the Fermi-Hubbard and the nuclear shell model on qubits.

Conferences: Non-equilibrium phenomena in strongly correlated ultracold matter
V. Ahufinger has presented an invited talk about Hilbert space fragmentation in the Non-equilibrium phenomena in strongly correlated ultracold matter workshop held in Erice from 9 May to 15 May 2024.
Scholarship: Beca LúZete SEDOPTICA
M. Canabal-Carbia ha sido una de las 5 personas agraciada con la beca LúZete de SEDOPTICA. Esta beca ayuda a financiar parcialmente la participación de jóvenes investigadores e investigadoras en congresos o eventos científicos de ámbito nacional o internacional enmarcados en todas las áreas de Óptica y Fotónica.
Scholarship: SPIE Optics and Photonics Scholarship
M. Canabal-Carbia has been awarded a 2024 Optics and Photonics Scholarship by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, for potential contributions to optics, photonics, or a related field.
Conference: SPIE Photonics Europe
From 7 to 11 of April 2024, I. Montes-González and M. Canabal-Carbia assisted to the SPIE Photonics Europe conference in Strasburg (France).
They were delighted to show some of their recent research and connect with researchers of Photonics around Europe. They presented some of their work related to the use of polarimetric techniques emphasizing its potential to improve the visualization and identification of tissue in brain samples and the optimization and calibration of a Mueller matrix imaging polarimeter.

Spring school: EuroPhotonics Spring School
V. Ahufinger has given a seminar about Designing topology in photonic systems in the EuroPhotonics Spring School 2024, which has taken place on board of the Silja Serenade ferry from Helsinki (Finland) to Stockholm (Sweden) from 3 to 5 April 2024.

Outreach Activity: Saló de l’Ensenyament
On the last day of the Education Fair (Saló de l’Ensenyament), Sunday, March 17, the Optics Group of the Department of Physics organized an activity from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in which various optical phenomena – colors, diffraction, fluorescence, reflection, and polarization – were explained, and experiments with light were conducted to discover what it is and how it behaves.

Outreach Activity: Dissabtes de la Física
On Saturday 2 March, the Optics Group opened their laboratories to high school students as part of the Dissabtes de la Física program. The students learned about the principles and applications of optics, such as polarization, diffraction, lasers and holograms. They also had the opportunity to interact with the researchers and ask them questions about their work.
Outreach Activity: 11F, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
On Tuesday 13 February, we received, at the Optics Group, the visit of students of the primary school of Bellaterra. M. Canabal and I. Estévez gave some workshops on light, including visible and ultraviolet light, lasers and fluorescence and phosphorescence phenomena.

Kick-off meeting: The national FASLIGHT network
D. Viedma and V. Ahufinger presented the research lines of the Optics group in the kick-off meeting of the national FASLIGHT network, which took place on January 18 and 19, 2024 at the School of Physics of the University of Salamanca, bringing together more than 65 researchers from the 15 nodes that make up the network.


Article selected as the journal cover for Nanophotonics
The recent article by D. Viedma, V. Ahufinger and collaborators from the University of Aveiro, titled “Topological n-root Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model in a non-Hermitian photonic ring system“, has been featured on the cover of Volume 13, Issue 1 of Nanophotonics.
This achievement highlights the interest of the presented results, as well as the quality of the research performed. Congratulations to the authors!
