Anti-inflammatory cotton fabrics and silica nanoparticles with potential topical medical applicationshas been published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces by Hao Li, Dr. Granados, Prof. Pleixats and Prof. Vallribera.

Congratulations to the whole group!

Abstract: The preparation of functional cotton fabrics and silica nanoparticles by direct covalent linking of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (salicylic acid, ibuprofen and diclofenac) through an amide group is reported. Moreover, the coating of cotton fabrics with silica nanoparticles functionalized with such antiinflamatory agents is found to increase the roughness of the surface, providing hydrophobicity to the modified fabrics. This property is enhanced by the addition of fluorinated alkyl silane (FAS) in the co-condensation process to form the coating solution. Characterization of the functionalized nanoparticles and cotton textiles is accomplished by microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The treatment of functionalized nanoparticles and cotton fabrics with model proteases and leukocytes from animal origin results in the in situ release of the drug by the selective enzymatic cleavage of the amide bond. Topical cutaneous applications in wound dressings and cream formulations for the acceleration of wound healing are envisaged.

The work entitled “Fluorous hydrophobic fluorescent (E)-Stilbene derivatives for application on security paper” has been publsihed in Dyes and Pigments Journal by Dr. Granados and Prof. Vallribera.

In this manuscript some (E)-Stilbene hydrophobic fluorophores possessing long perfluorinated or hydrocarbonated chains have been prepared through a stereoselective Wittig-Schlosser reaction. When covalently grafted upon paper, they give rise to a fluorescent-labeled paper upon irradiation with UV light. The hydrophobicity and oleophobicity of the fluorous (E)-stilbene derivative furnish self-cleaning properties. Application in the detection of money counterfeiting is envisioned.

La La Ligand! Lanthanum(III) complexes incorporating enantiopure PyBOX ligands are suitable catalysts for the enantioselective trifluoromethylation of β‐oxo esters in the presence of hypervalent iodine Togni reagent. DFT calculations reveal that the enantioselectivity of the reaction stems from the rigid coordination pattern around the metallic center that results in the efficient blockage of one of the prochiral faces of the intermediate LaIII enolate. More information can be found in the Communication by F. P. Cossío, A. New publication

“Lanthanum‐Catalyzed Enantioselective Trifluoromethylation using Electrophilic Hypervalent Iodine Reagent” has been published in Chemistry – A European Journal by Prof. Vallribera and Dr. A. Granados in collaboration with Prof. F. P. Cossío.

A highly enantioselective catalytic method for the synthesis of quaternary α‐trifluoromethyl derivatives of 3‐oxo esters is described. The reaction uses lanthanum (III) triflate and chiral pybox‐type C2‐symmetric ligands to generate intermediate La(III) complexes that incorporate an enolate moiety of the starting 3‐oxo ester and the trifluoromethyl transfer reagent. The enantioselectivity of the reaction stems from the efficient blockage of one of the prochiral faces of the La(III) enolate by one unit of the C2‐symmetric ligand.

New journal article has been published in ChemistrySelect by G. Fernández and Prof. Pleixats.

Abstract: Soluble platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) have been prepared by a two‐step procedure involving the reduction of chloroplatinic acid with ethylene glycol/NaOH at 160 °C and subsequent treatment with a THF solution of a tris‐imidazolium tetrafluoroborate at room temperature. The isolated Pt NPs have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron diffraction (ED), Energy‐Dispersive X‐ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and elemental analysis. They proved to be efficient and recoverable catalysts for the stereoselective hydrosilylation of internal alkynes in the presence and absence of solvent.
