In transitions between nonequilibrium steady states, the entropic cost of maintaining steady-state currents can be separated from that associated with the transition itself through the framework of excess and housekeeping entropy flux, or equivalently, adiabatic and nonadiabatic entropy production, as formalized by the Hatano-Sasa relation. In this presentation, I will briefly motivate the adiabatic/nonadiabatic decomposition in the context of classical Markov chains and highlight the subtleties that emerge in the quantum case. Building on this formalism, I will then present our latest results showing that, for slow transitions between quantum nonequilibrium steady states, the leading-order nonadiabatic entropy production is given by the path action with respect to a Riemannian metric on the parameter space, which can be linked to the Kubo-Mori-Bogoliubov quantum Fisher information.
