The annual Paper Award of the Information Theory Society in 2017 was given to the paper “The Quantum Reverse Shannon Theorem and Resource Tradeoffs for Simulating Quantum Channels” [IEEE Transactions on Information Theory 60(5), 2926-2959, May 2014], by Charles H Bennett, Igor Devetak, Aram W Harrow, Peter W Shor, and GIQ member Andreas Winter.
The IT Society Paper Award “is given annually for an outstanding publication in the fields of interest to the Society appearing anywhere during the preceding four calendar years” (from the statutes). It is one of the most coveted honours handed out by the IT Society, and with the Quantum Reverse Shannon Theorem, the first time a paper squarely in quantum information theory has been recognised. Along with the Claude E Shannon Award for Alexander Holevo in 2016, quantum information has finally arrived in the mainstream of information theory. The award was announced during the 2017 International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT), which was held 26-30 June 2017 in Aachen, Germany.
