Perfect estimation of an unknown quantum state is, in general, not possible. Hence, the aim is to find a measurement that maximizes the fidelity between the actual and the guessed states. However, given the optimal measurement, is it possible to improve the fidelity further? We will prove that, as in quantum state discrimination, where the error probability can be decreased by allowing the possibility of inconclusive results, the estimation fidelity can also be improved in a similar way.
