The quantum information of quantum interference.

We show how one can understand the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect from a first quantised perspective, connecting it with the quantum information concept of Schmidt decompositions that are core to entanglement theory.  This gives a general approach to distinguishability between particles’ “System” and “Label” degrees of freedom, corresponding to what has been called unitary-unitary duality in many-body physics. It’s useful in bringing other quantum information concepts across from the former to the latter, such as decoupling — we show how this connection leads directly to a notion of postselective quantum interference for distinguishable particles, in the sense that a HOM-style “dip” can occur despite the fact that (i) the input state is completely distinguishable, and (ii) the passive linear optical interferometer does not manipulate the distinguishing degree of freedom whatsoever.
