By now, the device-independent approach to quantum physics
has been a fruitful tool to better understand quantum theory and find
new applications of quantum technology. In the device-independent
approach, states and measurements are black boxes, without specific
physical properties and this device-independence has then influenced
the development of the so-called generalized probabilistic theories.
However, with this inheritance, in those theories it is difficult to
approach questions regarding physics. For example: How does a system
evolve in time? What would be the ground state energy of a harmonic
oscillator? In this talk I will give a perspective for a theory
independent approach regarding such questions and discuss the
consequences for quantum theory.
