This week, we had the privilege of attending an inspiring talk by Dr. Steven Thorne, who discussed the increasing availability of Generative AI (GenAI) tools and their impact on human–GenAI interactions. His presentation raised fundamental questions about the utility of GenAI beyond its traditional role in query-driven information retrieval.
The audience, including teachers as well as master’s and doctoral students, was particularly captivated by the primary focus of Dr. Thorne’s research: assessing the pedagogical potential of GenAI as a conversational partner for language learning. His work explores its capacity to enhance interactional competence and refine prompt design to address the common issue of overly verbose responses from ChatGPT. Without a doubt, this was one of the most thought-provoking talks of the year—offering plenty of food for thought!
