An article, in which Melinda Dooly and Johanna Buitrago contributed as co-authors, has been awarded the prestigious EuroCALL-CUP Best Article Prize. Published in ReCALL—a Q1-ranked journal in the Web of Science (WoS) index—the piece was recognized for its outstanding contribution to research in language education and technology.This annual award is presented by EUROCALL (European Association for Computer Assisted Language Learning), an international organization that promotes the use of technology in language education.
The article explores how migrants develop digital skills while learning languages through cultural exchange using a web app created within an EU-funded project. Conducted in Finland, Spain, Türkiye, and the UK, the study paired 46 migrants with 43 community members to co-create multilingual digital cultural activities. Findings revealed significant improvements in migrants’ digital skills—especially in digital content creation—while also challenging deficit-based perspectives on migrant populations. The recognition highlights the impact of research that combines inclusivity, language learning, and technology for social cohesion.
