In April 2024, the WIRE project embarked on a profound journey through the historical landscapes of Monte Sole, Italy. This Memory Route activity aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of the Monte Sole Massacre and its broader implications within the context of World War II and European history.
Led by Professor Luca Baldissara from Pisa University, one of the most relevant Italian historians in terms of Monte Sole research and WWII studies, the activity focused on critical themes such as resistance to oppression and the significant role of women in these movements. Professor Baldissara guided the students in identifying and analysing the most crucial issues related to dictatorships and resistance across Europe.
Timed around Italy’s Liberation Day on April 25th, the students traversed the Monte Sole Historical Park, engaging with the powerful narratives embedded in the landscape. This immersive experience allowed them to explore the educational potential of historical sites and personal biographies, fostering a deeper connection to the past and its lessons for the present.
The Memory Route in Monte Sole not only enriched the students’ historical knowledge but also highlighted the enduring relevance of resistance and the vital contributions of women in these struggles.
