Academic Stay in Mexico – July 2025

As part of our commitment to strengthening international academic collaboration, our colleague Alvaro Wong is currently carrying out a research stay at the Universidad de Sonora (UNISON) in Hermosillo, Mexico.

This initiative is part of a joint effort between the HPC4EAS (High Performance Computing for Efficient Applications and Simulation) Research Group, based in the Department of Computer Architecture and Operating Systems (CAOS) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and the research group at UNISON.

The purpose of this collaboration is to build long-term scientific ties and to develop a doctoral research proposal, focusing on the modeling and simulation of complex systems in the context of healthcare and high-performance computing.

ICCS 2025

As part of the International Conference on Computational Science (ICCS 2025) held in Singapore, our colleagues Francisco Mesas and Ramona Galeano presented their research work. Francisco showcased his study titled “A Customizable Agent-Based Simulation Framework for Emergency Departments”, while Ramona presented “Preliminary comparison of different EDs performance, using Simulation”.

We congratulate Francisco and Ramona on their outstanding presentation and valuable scientific contribution at such a high-level international conference.

Poster Presentation at ICCS 2025

During the International Conference on Computational Science (ICCS 2025) in Singapore, our colleague Miquel Albert Orenga presented his research work in poster format, titled:

“Modeling Parallel AI Applications for Performance Analysis on Cloud Environments”

ICCS 2025

Today marks the start of the International Conference on Computational Science (ICCS 2025) in Singapore. Our research group is proudly represented by Miquel Albert Orenga, Ramona Galeano, and Francisco Mesas, who are actively participating in the scientific sessions of the conference.

SARTECO 2025 Conference

We are pleased to share that our PhD students Ramona Galeano, Edixon Párraga, María Harita, and Mohsen Hallaj participated in the “Your Thesis in Three Minutes” competition, held as part of the SARTECO 2025 Conference, which took place in Seville from June 25th to 27th.

We are especially proud to congratulate María, who won third place in the competition for the clarity and quality of her presentation.

Congratulations to all four for representing our group with such enthusiasm and professionalism!

Closing the Progress Presentation Sessions for 2024–2025

Today, June 20th, 2025, our group participated in the ongoing progress presentation sessions for the 2024–2025 academic year of the PhD Program in Computer Science. These sessions are part of the activities within the research line in High-Performance Computing.

On this occasion, three of our PhD candidates presented the latest progress in their research work:

Ongoing PhD Progress Sessions – June 13th

Today, June 13th, two PhD candidates from our research group participated in the ongoing progress presentation sessions for the 2024–2025 academic year of the PhD Program in Computer Science, within the High-Performance Computing research line.

Miquel Albert Orenga presented his work on “Mapping Policies for AI Applications in HPC-Cloud Environments”.

Francisco Mesas Cervilla presented his research titled “Modular System for Modeling Hospital Emergency Services”.

We congratulate both candidates for their excellent presentations and continued progress in their doctoral research.

Today, May 30th, two more PhD candidates from our group participated in the progress presentation sessions for the 2024–2025 academic year of the PhD Program in Computer Science, within the research line in High-Performance Computing.

Continuing with the Progress Presentations

Last Friday, May 23rd, our group participated in the ongoing progress presentation sessions for the 2024–2025 academic year of the PhD Program in Computer Science. These sessions are part of the activities within the research line in High-Performance Computing.

On this occasion, Antonio González Cuevas presented the progress of his doctoral research, titled:
“ABM-GIS Urban Mobility Scenario Simulation Models for Strategic Decision Optimization in Emergency Services.”

1st Conference on Teaching Innovation and Research at the Escuelas Universitarias Gimbernat

On May 10th, researchers from the HPC4EAS group participated in the 1st Conference on Teaching Innovation, Quality, and Research at the Escuelas Universitarias Gimbernat.

Dr. Francisco Epelde opened the conference with an inspiring keynote entitled “When Sciences Meet: Engineering and Health for a Shared Future,” which was very well received by the audience.

Likewise, Mercè Planas presented her research on Optimizing the Management of a Hospital Emergency Department through a Digital Twin, which sparked considerable interest among the participants.

Progress Presentations

This week marks the start of the follow-up sessions for doctoral theses corresponding to the 2024–2025 academic year of the PhD Program in Computer Science. Within the framework of the research line in High-Performance Computing, our group has participated with the presentations of two of its PhD candidates:

  • Edixon Párraga presented the progress of his research, titled “Tuning the I/O system for Artificial Intelligence applications running on HPC systems.”
  • Ramona Galeano, who presented the advances in her doctoral work on “Emergency services management using simulation“.

New PhD Graduate at HPC4EAS

We congratulate Marina Morán, who has successfully defended her doctoral thesis titled “Modeling and Management of Energy Consumption in a High-Performance Computing System with Fault Tolerance.

We also extend our congratulations to her supervisors, Dr. Javier Balladini and Dr. Dolores Rexachs, as well as her co-supervisor, Dr. Enzo Rucci, for their valuable guidance and support throughout this work.

Our special thanks go to the members of the examination committee, Dr. Francisco Tirado, Dr. Emmanuel Frati, and Dr. Miguel Méndez Garabetti, for their participation and insightful contributions during the thesis evaluation.

New Additions to the Project on High-Performance Computing and Heuristic Algorithms for the Management of Intelligent Systems

We are pleased to announce the addition of Betzabeth León and Alvaro Wong to the research team of the project titled “High-Performance Computing and Heuristic Algorithms for the Management of Intelligent Systems” (Reference PID2023-147955NB-I00). Their involvement strengthens the group’s commitment to developing innovative and efficient solutions through the use of advanced computing technologies and heuristic techniques applied to various intelligent environments.

HPC4EAS participated in #MWC25

This week, the HPC4EAS research group participated in #MWC25, within the 4YFN fair, along with other research groups from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). The #EnginyeriaUAB delegation was present at the event in collaboration with the Parc de Recerca UAB, Emprèn UAB, and Alumni UAB.

The event was a key opportunity to connect with other researchers and companies, showcasing the impact of high-performance computing research on industry and society.

3rd International Conference of the Chilean Computer Science Society (SCCC)

The SCC2024 – Chilean Computing Conference is the most significant scientific event in Chile in Computer Science and Informatics. This annual event brings together renowned researchers and professionals to present and discuss the latest advancements in the discipline.

This year, researcher Felipe Tirado, a member of the HPC4EAS group, participated with his work titled: “Characterization Model for Irregular MPI Applications Based on PAS2P.” This work, developed in collaboration with Álvaro Wong, Dolores Rexachs, and Emilio Luque, offers an innovative approach to characterizing irregular MPI applications.

This event provided an excellent opportunity to share knowledge and establish connections within the scientific community, contributing to the advancement of research in high-performance computing.
