PhD in Sociology and Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Seville. I have carried out research stays at the Universities of California UCSB, Essex and Trinity College Dublin. I have been a research technician at the Sociedad de Estudios Económicos de Andalucía (ESECA) and currently Director of the Department of Sociology at the UPO. I have directed and/or participated in some twenty research projects in the fields of sociology of the family, youth, social values, public opinion, inequality and discrimination, social capital and sociology of risk. In addition to my experience in quantitative and qualitative data production and analysis, I have specialised in the design and construction of synthetic and composite indices.
In the framework of the design of the new ‘Sistema de Indicadores Sociales de Andalucía’ (IECA, 2008-2010), I participated in the elaboration of the Sistema de Índices Focalizados (Biblioteca Nueva, 2011) and designed the Índice de Capital Social (Papers, 2010). As results of the project ‘Social quality in Europe. Design and construction of composite indices for measuring and monitoring the quality of European societies’ (MICINN, 2013-2016), I highlight “Social and Political Participation”, “Quality of Life” and, as co-author, “Towards a system of indices on the quality of European societies” (Springer, 2019).
Based on the work ‘Índice de prevalencia de los accidentes personales en España y en Europa: diseño, construcción y cálculo’ (Mapfre, 2014): el Índice de Propensión al riesgo y sus aplicaciones ‘Design and construction of an Unintentional Injury Risk Index (UIRI) to measure frequency and severity of accidental injuries in Europe (International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion, 2018) and “Risk and vulnerability differences across the European Union based on an Accidental-Injury Proneness Index” (Social Indicators Research, 2021). The ‘European Punitivism Index’ (ESA RN27-midterm conference, 2023) is one of the results of the project: ‘Dimensions and predictors of punitivism in Andalusia (IESA-CSIC, 2019-2020). Among the works on social inequality and multiple discrimination, I highlight: ‘La desigualdad de género’ (Tecnos, 2016) and as co-author ‘El progreso de la igualdad de género en España y en Europa durante las dos últimas décadas’ and ‘Multiple discrimination from a social science approach: theory, research, and policies’ (ION, 2018). During 2023 I directed the research ‘The resources of Andalusian youth: diagnosis for the design and evaluation of public policies aimed at their full emancipation’ (CES-A, 2024).
