
Sociologist and social researcher. Professor of Sociology at the University of Seville. He has carried out research stays, as Visiting Researcher, at the Universities of Michigan, California, Essex, and Eurofound. He has directed the Sociology Department of the Andalusian Economic Studies Society (ESECA); the Andalusian Studies Centre Foundation (FCEA); and the Sociology Department of the University of Seville. Throughout his academic and research career he has carried out, individually or coordinating research teams, more than forty research projects in the fields of socio-economic and cultural development of contemporary societies, social values, sociology of emotions, methodology of social sciences, visual sociology, composite indicators on societal quality, or social change. In the field of the sociology of emotions, his work focuses on the study of emotional well-being and happiness. His publications include: Towards the future of Europe: Social factors shaping optimism and pessimism among citizens (Eurofound); ‘The Latin American paradox of happiness. Theoretical and methodological considerations’ (RevMexSo); ’Are older people as happy as younger people? La estratificación social del bienestar emocional en España (CIS); or ‘The Sociology of Emotions: Four Decades of Progress’ (Current Sociology). Currently, his methodological work focuses on the conceptualisation of experience as a sociological category, and on the development of Experience Analysis as a method applicable to the social sciences. During 2024, she is a member of the team responsible for the renewal of the Gender Equality Index of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE).
