Anicia García Álvarez

Engineer Economist, graduated from the Technical University of Merseburg, East Germany (1979). Master in International Economics, Universidad de La República, Uruguay (2001). PhD in Economics from the University of Havana, Cuba (2004). She worked for 18 years at the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Económicas (1980- 1998). She has been a Professor at the Centre for the Study of the Cuban Economy (CEEC) at the University of Havana since 1998. She was Director of CEEC between 2004 and 2010.

She has conducted research for over forty years on topics related to: the Cuban agro-industrial sector, the relationship between this and the external sector of the Cuban economy, Cuba’s dependence on imports in the food sector and the possible substitution of these imports, the transformations in the Cuban agricultural sector after 1989, the markets for consumer goods in Cuba and their organisation, as well as on Cuban social policy and the living conditions of the population, in particular access to food.
