Olga Castro

I joined the UAB in 2024 as “Beatriz Galindo Distinguished Senior Researcher“, a 4-year research fellowship granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, as part of its Talent Attraction programme. My role also involves teaching on the MA in Translation and Intercultural Studies (MUTEI) and BA Translation and Interpreting.
I am also Reader in Translation and Transcultural Studies in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, University of Warwick, UK (on leave, 2024-2027).

Academic Positions and Education

I read Journalism at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (1998-2002) and Translation and Interpreting Studies at the Universidade de Vigo (2002-2004). After completing my Diploma of Advanced Studies (MRes) in Translation and Paratranslation in 2007, and receiving my PhD in Translation Studies from the Universidade de Vigo in 2010 (Sobresaliente cum laude, International Doctorate Mention and Extraordinary Doctorate Prize for the best thesis in the humanities), my postdoctoral career took place entirely in the UK until December 2023. I held positions as Teaching Fellow in Translation at the University of Exeter (2010-11) and Lecturer in Translation Studies and Spanish at Aston University (2011-2019), where I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice in Higher Education in 2014. I joined the University of Warwick as Assistant Professor in Translation and Transcultural Studies in 2019. I was promoted to Associate Professor in in 2020, and eventually to Reader in 2023. At Warwick, I served as Deputy Director of Graduate Studies (PG Taught Programmes) at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures and was also programme director of the MA Translation and Cultures.

I have completed research stays at Sheffield Hallam University, under the supervision of Professor Sara Mills (2007); Universitat de Vic, under the supervision of Professor Pilar Godayol (2008); Universität Graz, under the supervision of Dr Michaela Wolf (2012), and Università degli Studi di Ferrara, working with Professor Eleonora Federici (2025). I have also delivered sessions as guest lecturer at BA and MA programmes at Universidade de Vigo, University of California at Santa Barbara, Universidad de Granada, Universidade de São Paulo, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Universitat de Barcelona.

I am Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK since 2014. In Spain, I received a positive evaluation as “Profesora Titular” by ANECA in 2021. In December 2024, I was granted 2 six-year research periods “sexenios” (2008-2013, 2015-2020) by the Catalan Research Agency AQU. In 2026 I obtained the R3 Certificate from the Spanish Research Agency, recognising my status as an Established Researcher according to the European Framework for Research Careers.
