The Wild West of Accessibility Standardization – a view from the ITU

3 July 2023, 9.30 CEST (online)

Invited keynote talk by Andy Quested

Being able to access any and all media, communication and data services on any device and through any platform is not simply a right that has to “be catered for”, it must be at the centre of the design of every service and application provided by broadcaster, distributors and ICT platforms.   Device manufacturers, app designers, content creators of course, the users need to be sure of universal interoperability.   Standardization can both help and hinder the universal access to services, so how can the ITU be a force for good in the wild west of accessibility, universality and personalization?

Andy QuestedAndy Quested joined the BBC in 1978 becoming a video-tape editor in 1985 working on comedy, children’s and documentaries. As part of a new technology department, he worked on introducing non-linear editing, stereo, widescreen, the BBC’s first HD programme Planet Earth I and the first UHD programme. Andy chaired the EBU Production Strategic Programme, has been a Rapporteur for the ITU-R on HDR, 3DTV and is currently Chair of ITU-R Working Party 6C which looks at production standards and is Co-Chair of the joint group on Accessibility. He is also an active member of SMPTE, becoming a Fellow in 2014.
