The Olympic Studies Centre of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (CEO-UAB) offers a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on the Olympic Games and the media on Coursera, the world’s leading online learning platform.
The Olympic Games and the Media is a five-week course taught in English, with spanish subtitles It is primarily aimed at undergraduate students, although it is open to the general public. A team of more than six people took part in the development of the course, led by Dr. Emilio Fernández Peña, Director of the Olympic Studies Centre (CEO-UAB) and course instructor.
In the course, students explore the world of the media and its role in shaping the Olympic Games, the most important sport’s event in the world. They learn about the role of the modern Olympic Games in our culture and how certain identities have become financiers of the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement, promoters of their value system, and creators of the Games’ global image.

- Television production of the Olympic Games and global audiences
- Opening and closing ceremonies: symbols and rituals of the Games
- Managing new social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, within the Olympic family
Students receive weekly teaching materials consisting of video-based lessons, assessment quizzes, and complementary readings, and are required to complete several essays. Students may enroll in the course free of charge and, upon successful completion, will receive a Coursera certificate signed by the instructor.
