DR MARIA ROSA GARRIDO SARDÀ, CO-INVESTIGATOR, UAB -UNIVERSITAT AUTÒNOMA DE BARCELONA

I am Lecturer in English language and linguistics at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. I also serve as Book Review and Social Media Editor for the Journal of Sociolinguistics. I was previously Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Multilingualism (University of Fribourg, Switzerland) from 2015 to 2017 and Lecturer (Maître Assistante) in English linguistics at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) from 2017 to 2021. I have also been a visiting scholar at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (2020), King’s College London (2012) and the University of Chicago (2011).

Through ethnographic and historiographic methods, my research projects aim to describe and explain the role of language in social processes of selection, regimentation and resistance in multilingual contexts from a critical perspective. My main research interests include the management of multilingualism in institutions, the construction of transnational identities and the ideologies of multilingualism, especially English, in non formal education.

I am author of Community, solidarity and multilingualism in a transnational social movement: A critical sociolinguistic ethnography of Emmaus (Routledge). I am a member of the editorial collective of Chroniques du Terrain (https://www.chroniquesduterrain.org/), a multilingual site that regularly publishes methodological reflections about critical ethnographic sociolinguistic research. I have also published research articles, book chapters and blog posts in English, French and Catalan about language and migration in Catalonia, the pedagogy of multilingualism, language and communication in a social movement, and language policy in a major humanitarian agency.
