Interview with José Saturnino Martínez García, professor of Sociology at the University of La Laguna

‘There is a risk that the pursuit of quality will be replaced by bureaucratic ritual. Quality is a process of gathering and analysing information, which should lead to proposals for improvement. But it may happen that the ritual surrounding the collection and processing of information does not lead to substantial improvement plans,’ according to José Saturnino Martínez García, former director of the Canary Islands Agency for University Quality and Educational Evaluation.
José Saturnino Martínez García is a professor of Sociology at the University of La Laguna, a leading researcher in the field of education and former director of the Canary Islands Agency for University Quality and Educational Assessment. His career is notable for its solid combination of academic excellence and institutional responsibility, with a particularly significant contribution to the rigorous analysis of university quality, the evaluation of educational policies and the improvement of the higher education system from a critical, well-founded and public impact-oriented perspective.
