The growing interest and offer of studies in Chinese language and Translation from Chinese in Spain, in particular, and in the rest of the world, in general, have not always been followed by teacher training or an improvement in teaching quality. Based on the belief that research can and should be an incentive for better teaching, TXICC research group believes that the time has come to look back at the past, analyse the present and consider where we should lead to in the near future. It is in this context that we launch a call for papers for the 1st International Conference on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and Translation between Chinese and Spanish/Catalan. It aims at becoming a forum for debate, reflection and exchange of experiences and research results that can ultimately contribute to an improvement of teaching quality and professional practice.

The organizing committee launches a call to send contributions in one of the following topics (but not limited to these):

  • Translation and interpreting between Chinese and Spanish / Catalan
  • Contrastive linguistics between Chinese and Spanish / Catalan
  • Teaching Chinese as a foreign language, with a special interest in the case of Spanish speakers
  • Teaching Chinese for specific purposes or given students’ profiles

The teaching of Chinese at the UAB began in the academic year 1988-89, so our university has more than 30 years of history and experience of teaching Chinese, first within the framework of Translation and Interpreting Studies and, later (since 2000-2001) also in the context of East Asian Studies. For more than three decades, the offer of undergraduate, master and doctoral studies in relation to translation and Chinese didactics has increased along with the growing social interest and demand. Teaching experience and practice have been supported since 2007 by the presence of the Research Group on Chinese into Spanish and Catalan Translation (TXICC), whose lines of research cover both the teaching of Chinese and its translation and, thanks to its intense research activity in the form of publications and conference contributions, has become a benchmark of Sinology in Spain. With the constitution of the Barcelona Confucius Institute Foundation (FICB) in 2010, of which the UAB is a board member, studies and research in this area have experienced a new and decisive impulse. In short, over the last few years, both teaching and research related to Chinese have increased and consolidated at the UAB, making this university become a key actor of this language in Spain.

The languages of the conference will be Spanish, Chinese and English. The conference will be held at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. For more information about how to get there, plese consult the university’s webpage.
