El Dr. Daniel Y. C. Fung fue catedrático emérito de Ciencia de los alimentos y de Industria y Ciencias animales en la Kansas State University (KSU), en Manhattan, Kansas (EUA). Su especialidad fue la microbiología de los alimentos y, dentro de este campo, fue un científico de prestigio internacional en el ámbito de los métodos rápidos y miniaturizados y la automatización. Tiene 1.000 publicaciones aproximadamente, entre artículos en revistas científicas, libros y comunicaciones en congresos. Por su colaboración con nosotros, es nombrado, en 2003, Profesor Altamente Calificado por la International Graduate School of Catalonia (IGSOC; Departament d’Universitats, Recerca i Societat de la Informació –DURSI–), que financiaba las ayudas a la internacionalización de programas de doctorado y másteres de las universidades públicas catalanas (IQUC); y en 2006, Profesor Distinguido de la Facultat de Veterinària de la UAB, en reconocimiento a su contribución a las cinco primeras ediciones del workshop MRAMA. Director del workshop internacional sobre Métodos rápidos y automatización en microbiología, celebrado anualmente durante 30 años en Manhattan, KS (1980-2010). Ganador del Premio Internacional del Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) en 1997, por la organización de esta serie de workshops; el Premio Waksman al Educador Excepcional de la Society for Industrial Microbiology en 2001; el Premio a la Excelencia en la Docencia Universitaria del College of Agriculture de la KSU en 2005; el Premio Carl R. Fellers del IFT en 2006, por su destacada trayectoria en Ciencia y Tecnología de los alimentos; el Premio Inaugural al Educador Excepcional en Seguridad Alimentaria de la revista Food Safety y ConAgra Foods, Inc en 2007, por su carrera docente: más de 20.000 alumnos y director de 121 estudiantes graduados (36 doctorados y 85 másteres); el Premio al Servicio Distinguido de la Chinese American Microbiology Society en 2009, por sus excepcionales funciones como presidente, tesorero y secretario (2000-2009); y el Premio de la Seguridad Alimentaria de la Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) en 2012, por la serie única de workshops en la KSU. Fundador y editor del Journal of Rapid Methods and Automation in Microbiology (1992-2009). Miembro de Honor del IFT, la American Society for Microbiology (ASM) y la International Academy of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST), de los EUA, y el Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST), del Reino Unido; y Promoción Inaugural de Miembros de Honor de la IAFoST (1998). En 1995, es invitado como ponente en el Instituto Pasteur de París (Francia), con motivo de la conmemoración del 100º aniversario de la muerte de Louis Pasteur.
